If we study the scriptures carefully, we can see that when Lord baptizes His church with the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit comes upon them (not in them). It was more than 40 days later, after Jesus ascended into heaven, that Jesus further empowered His church by baptizing His church with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). This is when the Holy Spirit came to indwell their spirits. At that moment Jesus breathed on them and said receive ye the Holy Ghost (John 20:22). The first Christians were born again when they witnessed Jesus' resurrection. When a person believes in the blood of Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins, and surrenders to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, they are born again, baptized by the Holy Spirit into the spiritual body of Christ, and the Holy Spirit comes to live within their spirit forever - provided they maintain their faith in Christ unto death (Romans 8:15, 1 Corinthians 6:19). Every born again Christian has the Holy Spirit living within their spirit from the new birth, regardless of whether they have received the baptism with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues or not (Romans 8:9). Some people confuse the born again experience, when the Holy Spirit comes to live within our spirit, with the baptism with the Holy Spirit, where the born again Christian is endued with power by the Holy Spirit coming upon them. Often, when believers are baptized with the Holy Spirit there is an associated manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, most notably speaking in other tongues (Acts 2:4, 10:45-46, 19:6). Sometimes the baptism with the Holy Spirit comes as a sovereign move of the Lord (Acts 2:1-4, 10:44-46). Often, but not always, it is administered by the leaders of the church to believers in Christ through the laying on of hands and prayer (Acts 8:15-17, 9:17-18, 19:6). It includes a giving of supernatural power to Jesus' body to be more effective witnesses of His resurrection (Acts 1:8). The baptism with the Holy Spirit is performed by Jesus to His body, not to unbelievers. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fireįor John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence… ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you Believers were baptized by being fully, momentarily, submerged in water to signify their association with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3-4). The word baptise means: to make whelmed, fully wet (Strong's Dictionary).
In the early church those who believed in Jesus Christ were baptized in water. When they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and womenĪnd they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized himĬan any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Our new spirit is placed into the spiritual body of Christ, and sealed in that spiritual body by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13, 4:30). The baptism into the body of Christ is a spiritual baptism which occurs when we become spiritually reborn (John 3:3, 5, 7, 1 Peter 1:23, 1 John 3:9).
#Dakes bible notes three baptisms free
Let us now examine scriptural evidence for the three baptisms.įor by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews of Gentiles, whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one Spiritįor as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ
This sometimes happens by a sovereign move of the Lord, but is generally performed by the elders through the laying on of hands onto newly born again believers, who have received water baptism.
